Introduction:  ISS has partnered with Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard to introduce the Cool Conversations Quiz & Traveling-Tutor™

Learning on the Move: Cool Conversations Traveling Tutor. In partnership with Interactive Speech Solutions, LLC, Microsoft announced the release of Cool Conversations (CCQ) Traveling Tutor, a complete study, testing, assessment, content development and reporting application that gives any Microsoft Windows® based computer, including desktop PCs, laptops and other handheld devices the ability to interact verbally with users. Through the use of Microsoft Windows Mobile, CCQ Traveling Tutor merges the natural speech synthesis capabilities offered by today’s computers with the latest advances in mobile technology resulting in a walking, talking computer that can speak to the child in either English, Spanish or 20 other languages.

CCQ Traveling Tutor requires no connection to the Internet to function, bridging the opportunity to students without access to Internet-based programs outside of school. Once content is loaded on the mobile device, students can work in school, on the bus, at home, anywhere and anytime. The CCQ system stores a report of all of the student’s activity which is transferred to the teacher’s computer when they return to the classroom.

Years of experience and trials as well as comparative studies of conventional methods of teaching and learning have demonstrated that the interactive speech methods used by the CCQ Traveling Tutor improve student results.  CCQ is an anywhere, anytime education system that increases user engagement and speeds learning with an approach that combines the three primary learning styles of auditory, visual and kinesthetic.   The CCQ Traveling Tutor operates on any Microsoft platform from desktop PC to laptop or tablet to the CCQ HP 2790 handheld pocket computer (PDA).  CCQ capitalizes on the natural speech synthesis capabilities offered by today’s computers to verbally interact with students.

The CCQ Traveling Tutor program empowers students by merging computer-based speech technology with the latest advances in mobile technology and PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants).  The result is a pioneering “walking, talking computer”.  The April 2007 issue of Technology & Learning the magazine stated “…the digital divide’s newest defining characteristic is 24/7 access to a personal computing device.”

The CCQ Traveling Tutor is an extremely mobile and engaging device designed for maximum flexibility to meet the needs of a diverse population of students and other individuals on the go.  The Traveling Tutor requires no connection to the Internet to function; bridging the opportunity for individuals without continuous access to Internet-based programs.

CCQ Traveling-Tutor on the PDA combines a learning application with a device that is ideal as a communication, task and time management tool.  The PDA is a powerful computing device with a broad range of useful functionality.

For today’s students and small business professionals, Windows Mobile powers versatile mobile devices that allow you:

•        Send and receive e-mails

•        View and edit your calendar and contacts

•        Work on mobile versions of familiar Office software

•        Browse the Internet

•        Use hundreds of applications such as maps and GPS

Here is an overview of some of the ways you can use your PDA:

·   Throw away your spiral notebook and leaky pen. Take notes on your Windows Mobile powered device using Notes or Pocket Word. Prolific writers will want to bring along their wireless IrDA or Bluetooth keyboard. Talkers can record their thoughts as they think them, and doodlers can jot down their thoughts in Notes.

·    The Voice Recorder is a great note-taking feature. You can capture quick voice notes for action items, group orders, and reminders that can be stored and organized later on your PDA or desktop PC.

·    View and update documents that look much like they do on your PC. Microsoft® Office Word Mobile* lets you open, view, and edit documents while you're on the move. Save changes and be confident that edits and formatting will come through intact when using your PDA to open a document.

·    With Microsoft® Office Excel® Mobile*, you can update your data on the go. Excel Mobile features a rich viewing, experience which lets you work with your spreadsheets just like you do on the PC. Plus, when you edit spreadsheets on your PDA, the formatting and changes are updated automatically, so they look the way they're supposed to when you open them on your PC.

·    Now you can take the Internet with you! Use Internet Explorer® Mobile to enjoy a rich Web experience wherever you go. Check for the latest news, get stock reports, confirm facts, see what the competition is doing, and check your Web-based e-mail all on your Windows Mobile.

·    With Microsoft® Office PowerPoint® Mobile, you can view and rehearse your slides when you're away from your PC.  PowerPoint Mobile lets you view an entire presentation, zoom in and out to better view details, jump to a specific slide - find the right information, right when you need it.

·         There are many applications available to add more useful functionality – here are a few:

·   Britannica Concise Encyclopedia contains brief overviews of more than 25,000 subjects.

·   For information on geography, countries, and natural resources, the 2005 World Almanac is also available for the Pocket PC and is packed with statistics, graphs, and tables.

·   With Pocket PCs, students no longer need to carry around separate scientific calculators. RealCalculator and Calculator Suite add scientific and statistical functions.

·    Another challenge for students is keeping track of homework assignments and class projects. The Dog Ate It works with Microsoft Outlook to keep track of class schedules. It can generate a complete list of all assignments and their due days and issue reminders. It also keeps track of the various grading scales used by different instructors.  ProStudent not only keeps track of when your assignments are due, it also tells you how well you’re doing in class. The program tracks progress on your assignments and keeps track of the grades you have received. A single tap generates your likely grade in each of your classes.

·    Other programs make use of the multimedia capabilities of Windows Mobile to make learning fun. Generally several PDA’s can be purchased in place of a traditional computing device.  Microsoft, ISS and HP are committed to working with user groups to customize this system to support the needs of a variety of individuals needing to master or have ready access to different types of information.

“As the head of Microsoft’s Mobility Solutions for Education team, I am very pleased to support the joint business development effort with Interactive Speech solutions [and Hewlett Packard].  Working with the I.S.S. Cool Conversations Traveling Tutor on a handheld device, organizations have an on-the-go teaching, time management and information platform.  The PDA is a great education and business tool for organizations because it does not limit users to working with desktop-based equipment in a fixed location.”

William Hagen, Microsoft Mobility Solutions for Education

Cool Conversations' Cool C Quiz (CCQ) from Interactive Speech Solutions "CCQ gives students prompt indication of their mastery of the subject matter; whether or not they have learned and mastered the concepts, thereby providing for the identification of weak areas and needs for further study. Students can therefore monitor their progress instantaneously. CCQ provides students with opportunities to learn independently and develop their critical thinking skills." Maria Isabel Sumilang, Science Teacher and on-line Tutor

Cool Conversations' Cool C Quiz (CCQ) from Interactive Speech Solutions "Children have open, curious minds and love to learn in any environment. CCQ in the classroom gives the students a treat - to be able to use the computer -
yet also helps them learn through the interactive questions and images. But, CCQ is also a great addition for the home. I think students see CCQ less as "homework" and as more of a fun computer game activity". Libby Pelman, Teacher and Tutor

Cool Conversations' Cool C Quiz (CCQ) from Interactive Speech Solutions “I think it’s great because teachers get to see exactly where their students are. It is colorful, gives hints and assists them while working through the problems”.  Edna Marzan, 5th Grade Teacher

Cool Conversations' Cool C Quiz (CCQ) from Interactive Speech Solutions "This is GREAT! Teachers would evaluate what the students needs are and what skills they are proficient in. CCQ seems to be very valuable.  Students would benefit because of the repetition and memorization.  Students would like this better than the programs that we already have.”  Norma Francisquini, 5th Grade Teacher
